Appleton has numerous historic "firsts." The city is the first location in the United States to operate a successful electric streetcar company. That began in 1886. It is also home to the first residence in the world fully powered by a hydroelectric station, which occurred when the Vulcan Street Plant opened its doors in 1882. Interestingly, the Valley Fair Shopping Center was the first enclosed shopping mall in the entire country. You can still see some of the remaining structure, which dates back to 1954.
